SUMMARY:An American Genocide: California Indians\, Colonization\, and Cultural Revival
DESCRIPTION:An American Genocide: California Indians\, Colonization\, and Cultural Revival\nBenjamin Madley and Greg Sarris\nIn conversation \nThere’s one major aspect of the popular Gold Rush lore that few Californians today know about: during that period\, California’s Indian population plunged from perhaps 150\,000 to 30\,000\, much of the decline from state-sponsored slaughter. Addressing the aftermath of colonization and historical trauma\, two leading scholars explore the miraculous legacy of California Indians\, including their extensive contributions to our culture today. Join us for a conversation with Greg Sarris\, scholar/author and Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria in northern California\, and UCLA historian Benjamin Madley\, author of the groundbreaking study: An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe\, 1846-1873. \nBilingual program Spanish/English \nJoin us for a post-program reception in the Library’s courtyard! \nFREE Reservations at lfla.org/aloud

SUMMARY:Natural Dye Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Local dyer Ashley Thayer will provide an overview of natural dye techniques. We will cover the basic processes of dyeing with demonstrations of two of the most interesting dyestuffs native to Oaxaca: cochineal and indigo (añil). Thayer is a self-taught dyer and uses techniques and materials from all over the world as well as local ones\, as dyers have done for centuries. In Los Angeles\, she forages her own dyestuff\, including cochineal (bugs found on prickly pear cacti used to make a brilliant red dye)\, and is honored to share knowledge about these practices that may not otherwise be available to a wider audience.

SUMMARY:Rebellion! Public Art and Political Dissent: Oaxaca and L.A.
DESCRIPTION:Chaz Bojórquez and artist collective Tlacolulokos\nIn conversation with curator Amanda de la Garza \nWith the likes of Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco\, Mexico has a long tradition of politically engaged public art which has often depicted—with varying degrees of accuracy—the country’s indigenous population. Two gifted young artists from the collective Tlacolulokos have been commissioned to create a new artwork in the Central Library’s Rotunda in juxtaposition to the 1933 historic Cornwell murals. They will discuss their new work as well as their street-level actions in their hometown of Tlacolula\, Oaxaca\, with the godfather of Cholo writing\, Chaz Bojórquez and project curator Amanda De La Garza. What is the role of clandestine art actions as a form of political dissent? How effective is it? What are the parallels and differences between how street art is used in Mexico and the United States? \nBilingual program Spanish/English with simultaneous interpretation by Antena Los Ángeles. \nJoin us for a post-program reception in the Library’s courtyard!

SUMMARY:Lost & Found at the Movies: Stories from Latino L.A.
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Special Guests Edward James Olmos and Alejandra Espasande-Bouza\nIn conversation with John Nein\, Senior Programmer\, Sundance Film Festival \nIn celebrating the breadth and diversity of Latino film culture in Los Angeles\, we’re joined by actor and filmmaker Edward James Olmos\, LA born and bred\, for a look at the films and experiences that were formative to his work as well as his role in the emergence of a strong\, distinctive cinema that countered stereotypes and offered complex stories of Latino characters and communities. \nAs a prologue\, we also explore one of the most fascinating but overlooked stories in Hollywood history: the Spanish-language features produced by the studio system in the early years of talkies\, after the introduction of sound threatened Hollywood’s once universal product. These films (like Universal’s 1931 Dracula in which you will find Carlos Villarias rather than Bela Lugosi bearing fangs) as well as those imported from Latin America\, sustained a string of downtown theaters and a thriving film culture from the 1930s to the early 1960s. \nSadly many of these movies\, stars and theatres have been lost to time\, but we remember them with film archivist Alejandra Espasande-Bouza (Academy Film Archive) along with a sneak peek at some rare treasures forthcoming from the Academy Film Archive and the UCLA Film & Television Archive PST programs. \nLFLA Members enjoy exclusive access to the exhibition Visualizing Language: Oaxaca in L.A. prior to the program\, and a Member Reception to follow the program. \nLost & Found at the Movies is generously supported by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association
